Muscle strains and lumbar strains are the most common cause of low back pain. A strain occurs when the muscle fibers are stretched abnormally or torn. Back Strain is the second most common cause of missed work in the United States followed by the common cold.

Causes
There are numerous causes for back strain. Improper lifting, obesity, twisting the back in an unusual manner and a sudden forceful movement are a few.

Symptoms
Symptoms of Back Strain include:
- Pain around the low back and upper buttocks
- Low back muscle spasm
- Pain associated with activities that is generally relieved with rest
If you experience any of the symptoms below, you could have a serious injury to the spine and should see a doctor immediately:
- Loss of control of bowels and / or bladder
- Progressive lower extremity weakness
- Severe and constant pain

Diagnosis
Your physician will likely be able to diagnose a simply back strain just by physical examination and taking a history. However, it may become necessary to have x-rays, and MRI or CT, bone scan or even lab work to make an accurate diagnosis.
